Because Black Trans Women are Beautiful

I've finally decided what to write.

In light of the recent murder of Black trans woman Penny Proud, the fact that it's Black History Month, and the fact that Black and trans women are systemically dehumanized and demeaned as well as disproportionately raped and murdered, I've decided to write a feminist YA fantasy fanfiction celebrating and affirming the beauty and diversity of Black women, trans women, and women who are both. How, you ask?

Isabelle Lorde.

Belle, along with several other queer women and women of color (and nonbinary people of color), is a main character in this fanfiction. She's the reincarnation of the Greek goddess of beauty, love, and sexuality, Aphrodite. She's also a dark-skinned Black Haitian trans woman, the behaviorist for her team of monster fighters and assorted supernatural badasses, and generally awesome.

And, of course, the story is going to contain a lot of discussion about Black women (I've asked a lot of questions to make sure I'm doing this respectfully, but if you see something problematic or disrespectful, let me know) and queer women in real life, because real life Black women, queer women, and Black queer women are awesome and deserve to be celebrated and written about.

I doubt I'll finish by the end of February, but I will finish.

I love writing about women and nonbinary people, especially those of color. Marginalized people are awesome and our stories - their stories, right now, because I'm white and Black people deserve to take center stage this month - and struggles deserve to be told, especially in fantasy. Because white cishet men aren't the only ones who can be badass.

It's Not Just One Life

While surfing YouTube, I came across a racist comment about Michael Brown's murder that portrayed the white citizens of Ferguson, MO, as innocent victims. The comment basically said that people are making a big fuss over nothing. As if the murder of an innocent man was nothing.

I hate people sometimes.

But...I have abilities that I can use to be an ally to people of color. I have white privilege, which means that in so many circles, I will be taken more seriously than a person of color would. My white privilege means that my grandparents and great-grandparents were granted access to high-quality education and high-paying jobs; that I was born into a wealthy family and live in a wealthy neighborhood, less than two miles away from one of the most rigorous and supportive public high schools in the state.

It isn't right or fair that I live the cushy life I do. I don't deserve this life. But I can use it to help change the world, and that is important. That is why I wrote this poem. It's called It's Not Just One Life.

It wasn't just one life. It was the life of Michael Brown, of Eric Garner, of Trayvon Martin, of every black boy who has been shot by police. It is the life of Tyra Hunter, the black woman who died of medical neglect in 1995. It is the life of every trans woman of color who has been murdered because society hates anyone who doesn't fit into its bullshit box called "normal" well guess what THERE IS NO NORMAL!

It is the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., assassinated because he dared to fight for his people's right to equality. It is the life of every black woman raped in slavery, of every man whipped, of every person devalued or killed because they weren't white. It is the life of every Cherokee who died on the Trail of Tears, every Chinese worker on the Continental Railroad forced to work under crappy conditions for low wages because WHITE PEOPLE decided they didn't deserve any better, it is the life of every child murdered in Central America because they weren't allowed a safer place to stay, every Rom killed in the Holocaust.

It is the life of everyone and anyone murdered because their identity didn't match up to what the kyriarchy felt it "should" be, as if white straight rich Christian cis enabled male is somehow the ideal. It's not the ideal. It's not normal, but because you fall into one or more of those categories, you have been allowed to say that it is the ideal. You have been allowed to pretend it was JUST ONE LIFE.

It is not just one life. It never has been. But maybe we can stop the body count increasing.

Victory!

I won NaNoWriMo! 55,309 words!

Okay, the last three chapters were mainly the main characters swearing for several pages, but hey, that's what revision is for!

Also, the title is now Not Another Corny Road Trip Love Story, I changed Ani's name to Atea, and my English teacher is making me promise to make him a character (so I'm including this wizard guy who is like half him and half Dumbledore). It should be fascinating.

Other interesting notes: I am finding it hard to get used to using contractions again, not working on my novel in class (I usually get my homework done early, and since I'm pretty quiet, none of the teachers really care much what I do after that), and writing numbers as digits and not words again.

Also, I just want to say how proud I am of the other participants, especially a certain German blogger who goes by Betty and speaks amazing English. I know that this NaNo has been hard for her, because she based part of her novel on her relationship with her crappy ex-boyfriend, and I think she was very brave for pushing herself through that.

The Stars are Fading

The serialized story blog is up! I have five characters shown in a character chart - Lena, Jesus (pronounced hay-soos, like on The Fosters), Cam, Gillian, and Adrian, in that order. I'll start up the actual story the minute I have time, but I'm in North Carolina at the moment for a family function, and I'm going back to Michigan on Labor Day (and after that, I'm starting my junior year). I haven't seen any relatives yet - most of them are staying at other hotels, so I'm going to just walk around for the moment. It's really pretty down here (hot, yet pretty...that sounded vaguely dirty...) so I don't want to miss anything. I'll try to keep you guys updated, but no promises.

Serialized Story

I was reading this book, Goth Girl Rising, where the main character's love interest was a comic book writer who serialized his work. I thought it was really interesting, and even though I don't draw, I've decided to do the same. So, even though I'm still keeping up We are the Rainbow, I'm starting a new blog for a serialized thing that I'm working on. I haven't decided what it's called, though.

It seems like a really fun idea, and hopefully it'll get a publisher to take notice of me. Wish me luck.

Charisma

I'm sure all of you WriMos are excited about camp this summer!

Anyway, what with the whole Schism of the Chix thing, I kind of ditched my last project (a lesbian paranormal romance entitled Fang and Claw). However, at Project People (which you shall learn about as soon as I can get the pictures for it), Christina and I came up with this awesome LGBTQ+ pride love story about this wonderfully wonderful bisexual drag queen named Lucille and her boyfriend Juan, as well as Juan's sister Em and Em's girlfriend Taia. There's going to be magic, too, of course - since when do I write stories that don't include magic? - but the main idea is about unconditional love and happiness. It's a really beautiful love story. A New Beginning

Some of you may recognize me as Bess, one of the Bronte Chix. Yeah, well, it's a long and messy story but I may not be a 'chick' much longer. There was a bit of a falling-out...and, well, ahem. So what exactly is We are the Rainbow?

I chose the symbol of the rainbow because of how much it symbolizes: gay pride, hope, new beginnings, and God's promise to NEVER give up on humanity no matter what. All of those meanings are important to me.

I'll try not to mention the Bronte Chix after this, but on one of our posts I had a gay pride poem. The link is below if you want to read it. And, well, I think you can guess why the issue of gay rights might be so important to me. If you can't, that's okay too. Anyway, part of it is that I just can't stand the idea of discrimination. It just makes my blood boil.

Also, if anyone remembers the Hugs for Anna project everything for that will be moved here.
